Happy New Year - 2025

Minihouston - Editor-in-Chief

Thank you to Bob and the rest of WIS for allowing us to create this new world, and thank you all for trusting me with taking on the commissioner job. I look forward that we can make this not only one of the more competitive worlds in HBD but also the most interesting and interactive with the use of the HBD discord and our blog. Looking forward to Season 1 starting in the new year. Let's get it!

Rivalry Week

Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

Before we even kick off with our inaugural season, let's take a look at some of the rivalries that are already forming by the fanbases; but we are excited to see what rivalries end up forming on the field as well.

If we had it our way, we'd ask the commissioner's office to schedule in a rivalry week just after the All-Star break where we saw bitter rivals going head to head for bragging rights.

  • The Soundwave Showdown
    • Vancouver vs. Tacoma
    • The teams on either side of the Puget Sound face off. not only is this a regional battle but it also pits the US against Canada. USA, USA, USA!! Vancouver brings the cool, cosmopolitan spirit while Tacoma answers with raw, industrial energy.
    • Kick-Off Event: A boat parade down the Puget Sound, often times highlighting the expensive custom yachts of the two owners. The Vancouver Owner's yacht is as colorful as their fake Monopoly money.
  • The Hollywood Harvest
    • Los Angeles vs. Fresno
    • It's the glitz and glamour of Hollywood colliding with the hardworking farming ethos of the Heart of the Valley. Instead of white chalk down the base paths, for this series LA will use red to emulate the card carpet of Hollywood.
    • Kick-Off Event: A fund raising event for the region is the Harvest Feast; that pairs local farmers with Stars in a charity cook-off event; followed by a a celebrity charity softball game.
  • The Havoc of the High Plains

    • The tail of two cities, situated in the shadow of the great Rocky Mountains, from the heights of Pikes Peak (Colorado Springs) to the depths of the Great Salt Lake, this battle is for the heart of the Rockies.
    • Kick-Off Event: The night before Game 1 of the series, fans are treated to an amazing drone show; including images such as the Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, the Great Salt Lake, and desert cacti among other items. Game 1 itself, it kicked off by a fly over by the US Air Force Academy.
  • The Upstate Uprising
    • Buffalo vs. Syracuse
    • It's the cold, relentless power of Buffalo on Lake Erie versus the tranquil Finger Lake and intellectual precision of Syracuse just up the Erie Canal. A battle for the soul of New York!
    • Kick-Off Event: The Erie Regatta - hundreds of people lineup for a multi-day race down the Erie Canal. Everything from kayaks to canoes to row boats to dinghies to custom made man powered boats can be seen here.

Parks & Fan Base - National League

Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

Alright Stitches fans, as the Historian of the Reporter; while the National League owners sort out the city deals they are getting, let's take a look at the current cities, ballparks, and a map of all the fan bases for the American League.
  • North
    • Chicago, IL - Wrigley Field - 38,765
    • Buffalo, NY - Sahlen Field - 21,050
    • Trenton, NJ - Arm & Hammer Park - 6,606
    • Helena, MT - Kindrick Legion Field - 2,010
  • East
    • Cincinnati, OH - Great American Ball Park - 42,059
    • Indianapolis, IN - Victory Field - 15,500
    • Scranton, PA - PNC Field - 10,982
    • St. Louis, MO - Busch Stadium II - 43,975
  • South
    • Mexico City, Mexico - Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium - 26,000
    • Charlotte, NC - Knights Castle - 10,002
    • San Antonio, TX - Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium - 6,300
    • Nashville, TN - First Horizon Park - 10,138
  • West
    • Scottsdale, AZ - The Davis Ballpark - 7,500
    • Fresno, CA - Chukcansi Park - 12,500
    • Tucson, AZ - Kino Sports Complex - 11,000
    • Colorado Springs, CO - UCHealthh Park - 9,000
Here is how the franchises rank in terms of Park Factor
  • Pitcher Friendly
    • 0.832 - San Antonio
    • 0.927 - Fresno
    • 0.950 - St. Louis
    • 0.953 - Buffalo
    • 0.956 - Mexico City
    • 0.983 - Charlotte
  • Neutral
    • 0.993 - Chicago
    • 1.000 - Colorado Springs
    • 1.010 - Cincinnati
    • 1.020 - Trenton
    • 1.036 - Scranton
  • Hitter Friendly
    • 1.041 - Helana
    • 1.067 - Nashville
    • 1.078 - Indianapolis
    • 1.119 - Scottsdale
    • 1.194 - Tucson
The National League - and already with out the DH, will be a much tougher League to hit in outside of a select few parks. While San Antonio doesn't compare to the depressing constant rain of Tacoma, it's ballpark will be slightly less pitcher friendly. While Tucson edges out their AL counterpart of Texas as the most hitter friendly in all of Hardball Stitches. Though as expected, Cincinnati will be the place to easily launch a defensive first Shortstop's first career Home Run. San Antonio might have the lower park factor, but it might be tougher to get a hit in St. Louis - time will tell.

After some polling, here is how the Fan Bases is laying out for North America.

Parks & Fan Base - American League

Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

Alright Stitches fans, as the Historian of the Reporter; while the National League owners sort out the city deals they are getting, let's take a look at the current cities, ballparks, and a map of all the fan bases for the American League.
  • North
    • Fargo, ND - Newman Outdoor Field - 7,500
    • New York, NY - Shea Stadium - 55,775
    • Syracuse, NY - NBT Bank Stadium - 11,602
    • Tacoma, WA - Cheney Stadium - 9,600
  • East
    • Baltimore, MD - Park at Camden Yards - 48,262
    • Boston, MA - Fenway Park - 33,925
    • Cleveland, OH - Progressive Field - 43,345
    • Philadelphia, PA - Citizens Bank Park - 43,000
  • South
    • Arlington, Tx - Globe Life Field - 49,170
    • Durham, NC - Durham Bulls Athletic Park - 10,000
    • Montgomery, AL - Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium - 7,000
    • New Orleans, LA - Shine on Airline - 10,000
  • West
    • Los Angeles, CA - Dodger Stadium - 56,000
    • Phoenix, AZ - Chase Field - 48,700
    • Salt Lake City, UT - Smith's Ballpark - 15,500
    • Vancouver, Canada - Nat Bailey Stadium - 6,500
Here is how the franchises rank in terms of Park Factor
  • Pitcher Friendly
    • 0.793 - Tacoma
    • 0.868 - New York (N)
    • 0.896 - Los Angeles
  • Neutral
    • 0.998 - Syracuse
    • 1.010 - Philadelphia
    • 1.035 - Vancouver

    • 1.108 - Cleveland
    • 1.111 - Boston
    • 1.129 - Durham
    • 1.140 - Texas
Tacoma will do everything they can to limit Triples and Home Runs; plan according when visiting that ballpark. Baltimore will likely see the most home runs, while Texas and Durham could depending on the handedness of the hitter and their ability to push or pull the ball. New York is not the place to play small ball, limiting everything except home runs.

After some polling, here is how the Fan Bases is laying out for North America.

Franchises For Sale

 Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

Alright Stitches fans, franchises are being bought out, with only a handful remaining. According to the Commissioner's office in Scottsdale, there are only 4 remaining teams for purchase. Two of those not listed above have been agreed upon; but are up in the air if they will claim a National or American League team. If you're a reach billionaire with money and time to spare, or know of one feel free to forward this over to them and gauge their interested in this new league. Fans are enamored with a potential Buffalo v Syracuse or Scottsdale v Arizona World Series, and even down to the Divisional level with Mexico City and San Antonio in the NL South. As soon as all the teams are claimed we'll take a deeper dive into the fan bases of each team and who in America is supporting who. Stay tuned.

Rules

Minihouston - Editor-in-Chief

Lots of movement from the Commissioner's office as we prepare to kick off the new league. We'll do our best to keep everyone updated via the blog. But the HBD discord (click for the invite) also has a specific section for our world to have conversations in; whether its rules, trades, or just general discussions about the league. As we've said, you are not required to join but definitely helps build the world's community.

Our official league world rules are still a work in progress, and nothing in concrete at the moment; but wanted to be transparent about our goals with them. I hope it's clear in the below that my goal is still to allow people to build teams the way they like but tries to address some of the deliberate tanking that occurs on some worlds.
  • It's sometimes hard taking input for ALL owners as there are so many different opinions; to help minimize that I'll have a revolving committee that I get feedback from as issues or conflicts arise.
    • It will likely include 3-6 league owners that have proven they are committed to the league. After our first few initial seasons, any committee member will be required to have at least 3-4 seasons in Hardball Stitches under their belt. This is to give owners time to get familiar with the history of the league before volunteering for the committee. It also shows that they are committed to the development of the world. My preference is that they have discord, as it's much easier to have a group discussion there; but will still take into consideration those who do not want to bother with another website/login.
    • The committee will be revolving as each member serves a short term; how long is TBD. This is to help ensure one small group is not controlling the direction of the league and to help keep each other accountable in our decisions.
  • A "soft" 55 minimum win requirement.
    • I'm typically against a MWR as I think it's the easy solution to try and address tanking without addressing some of the real issues of tanking. That said, that is why I'm calling this a 'soft' 55. Don't get me wrong, 55 will still be the requirement; but also understand that life is not black & white. Is a team who wins 53 or 54 that was on pace to win 60 who had a bad injury or stretch of unlucky sims really any worse that a team who didn't have those things occur and won 55 games? Not in my opinion; they are near equals just one got unlucky. Perhaps their Gold Glove Shortstop made an error that cost them a game. For any franchise that falls under 55 wins; the committee will take a look back at their season and try to determine if they put in enough effort to still produce a solid team. Some examples that I personally would be focused at looking into are:
      • Was there a fire sale; where they could have held on to one or two ML talents and made it easier to get to 55 wins.
      • Did someone with ML experience get demoted to the minors just so the team wouldn't perform as well or to save on years of experience?
      • What Free Agents did they add in the off season? Was there even an effort, and what talent level were they? Signing AAA/AAAA guys says that you are not trying very hard.
      • How much money did they transfer? I have less sympathy for someone who missed 55 wins yet still signed $25+ in IFA.
      • What promotions did they make in an attempt to stay above the line? And when were they made? Right at roster expansion is likely too late in the season to try and focus on your 55 Wins.
  • Players should be within 50 rating points of the average fielding ML position for any position they play. The one offs where a player fills a position in extra innings or because everyone is tired will be given a pass. But if they routinely play at a position, they will need to fall within this requirement. This one definitely has to be unique from other HBD worlds. And while I've debated at what point should the min. requirement be set? So I welcome any feedback, for now my thought is this:
    • Under the current HBD, there is no DH in the National League. And I fully understand that there might be a DH type that a National League team wants to play at 1B/LF/RF; and to me that's fine. That's strategy of losing fielding for their improved bat. What the rule is intended for, is to keep DH/C/1B types out of the prime defensive positions - 2B/SS/3B/CF.
      • 1B would be 40s across the board. So even if you have 0 range like some DH types, they could still play 1B. A DH would need at least a 5 range to play in LF and a 15 range to play in RF.
    • If/when the DH is added to the National League, I think we could readdress how close to league average a player must be - even if it stays at the current 50.
    • No current restrictions on pitchers; though the easy one to add would be a minimum requirement on a pitcher's control. I don't care if the guy has 90 splits with a 90 P1; 30-40 control is going to be awful. Would appreciate feedback on this one if you want to share.
  • Trades will be reviewed independently from any other non-trade action. This allows for teams to make a 2 for 1 + 2 for 1 deal if they see fit. I will ask that as soon as the deal is made, they post about it in global trade. Then it will be up to the other owners to address the trade in their own opinion. What this rule is intended for and those where the non-trade action comes into play, is having Team A agree to place a claim on Team B's waived player as an attempt to get around that players No-Trade clause.
  • Minor leagues should be maintained properly and not ignored. Positions players should not be pitching. Pitchers should not pitch consecutive days at 0% rested.
    • Now this is VERY gray on purpose. I'm not interesting in policing every team at all levels. If you have a complaint about another owner; please send me a trade chat and let me know. I will then address the issue with the team by giving them a warning. I'm only warning a team twice before the committee addresses their team. While I wouldn't remove someone from the league for their awful minor league team; it's not going to be ignored either. Let's have some respect for the world and our community and don't let things get out of hand.

Here are a sample list of punishments that the commissioner and committee may apply to an infraction. Other actions may be taken as well as determined by the committee. Considering the group we are trying to put together for this world, I do not expect any issues; but just trying to lay the groundwork in case an issue does come up.
  • Removal from league
  • Payroll restrictions
  • Transfer restrictions
  • Draft pick loss
  • IFA blackout

Here are a list of other rules that have been thought about but not on the current list to be included.
  • Spending limits are not on my list, because as I said I'd like to allow people to build their franchises as they see fit; but as noted above, they are on the infractions list.
    • I get that IFAs can get expensive, but they are also a crapshoot. You might have $30M to spend but not find the right guy until late into the season - and that's if your scouts even find them.

Final note - WISBob gets a bye, I'm not going to be the one to kick out the owner of HBD. 😁

Welcome to the Hardball Stitches Reporter

Minihouston - Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to the Hardball Stitches Reporter; the blog for a new world in WhatIf Sports' Hardball Dynasty Baseball, and first created under the new regime of WIS. Or rather will be, as we are still working on the timing of when to start. That said, we have approval from WISBob and his dev team to start the league; so the league is a go. Many of you who are receiving a link to this post are on the early recruiting list, but first let me tell you about the two guys working on putting the world together - it's highly likely you've played in a world with one of them. But we are also trying to put a focus on the HBD discord to help build the community but also to see how it can help improve (if any) the game itself. But let's take a deeper look at the two leading the charge.

The world's commissioner will be Minihouston; who is relatively new to HBD but dove deep into the game as quick as he could and found some success in Cobbfather where he eventually revived their blog to what it is today. Blog site if you want to check it out. He wrote an article about his first eight seasons in HBD - article, what a learning curve it was...is. Not only the commissioner but he'll be the editor-in-chief as well. He has a few routine articles such as quarterly power rankings, draft recaps for both the Rule 4 and Rule 5 drafts, and end of season record book recaps. But has also included articles about up coming free agents, fantasy point rank of players per season, trade reviews, fat cats - which is an article about overpaid players that are no longer contributing much, and salary reviews. After winning the Cobbfather S54 World Series, he retired from ownership but continued writing their blog for fun. He couldn't pass up the temptation from a few owners and made his way back to the league in S60. He always takes the approach that the articles are written by a fictional writer of the world, varying from serious news reporters to a more comedic approach - though I can't say everyone shares the same sense of humor. In Cobbfather he often ribbed on the commissioner for being anti-American since he had a team located in Vancouver but he'll pick on owners from time to team. That said, if you are offended, just send a quick TC and he'll back off a bit. The articles are just meant for a laugh and to add an extra layer of depth/fun to the world.

I want to introduce you to some of the "writers" for the blog. Some might feel familiar but if you can't quite pin point it, they are all characters from TV/Movies.

  • Amy Amanda 'Triple A' Allen - You guessed it, she often covers the minor leagues and is a fictional news reporter on the TV show, The A-Team.
  • Gabrielle O. Alvarez-Tillman - With initials that spell out GOAT, she'll cover the Hall of Fame, and is the only one not from a TV Show/Movie.
  • Eli Cash - comes to us from The Royal Tenebaums and will cover Budgets for the Reporter.
  • Jack Torrance - is our history buff and will cover records among other things. And you guessed it, he's the main character in The Shining - who is also a writer in the movie.
  • Jessica Fletcher - Is for some of our old timers, she's the main character for Murder, She Wrote with a focus on mystery novels; Jessica will cover Free Agency - which are always mystery on where someone will land.
  • Ricard Castle - Is the namesake for the TV show Castle, who writes crime stories. Richard's focus will be the power rankings.
  • Catherine Trammell - last but definitely not least is Catherine - you might not know the name but she has a rather infamous scene in Basic Instinct; her focus is on serial killers in the movie. For the Reporter, she'll focus on Rumors and Owner interviews.

Bruinsfan911 will be his partner in crime for the blog and helping fill the world with owners. He's ran or helped run blogs for numerous worlds- Stickball, Plumpy, & FYC with more of a focus on WAR, Hall of Fame voting, etc. They'll work together on collecting data from the league to help improve each others blog posts.

Both men have been in touch with WISBob and working to get him included as well. So even if you don't like their blog work, here's your chance to beat Bob at his own game.

Back on the discord, we'll have our own channels and a custom tag for the league on the HBD discord; including team emojis for each city. We've started recruitment so cities are filling fast as we work on getting the blog a little better organized and our googlesheet documents set up. What we are looking for are owners who will hopefully commit long term to the success of the league and be around for multiple builds of their franchise. As a private world, we'll have a few rules in place but I'd rather not get into that just yet as they are still being developed. Nothing too restricting but we want some limitations to prevent someone from having an AA/AAA team as they tank their way through the regular season. If you have questions, feel free to DM Minihouston on discord.

As we work through recruitment and the start date for the world, we'll get some posts up introducing each of the owners and define who will be in what division; along with what city that owner is committed to. We have no big rush to get started, so stay tuned for more!
