The Ball That Shouldn’t Have Risen

 Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

It begins, as all miracles and nightmares do — quietly.

The baseballs are spinning. A cyclone of white leather, red seams, and blind hope. Inside the glass, they crash and ricochet, each one desperate to be the one. The audience breathes in unison, like a congregation watching a storm crawl toward their church.

The lights flicker. The air hums.

Then something happens.
A tremor.
A sound that isn’t mechanical, not quite.

And from the churning storm — a single ball begins to rise.

Slowly. Too slowly.

The studio is frozen. Cameras fix on it, lenses wide and trembling. A murmur ripples through the crowd, that low, uncertain murmur that always comes before revelation.

The ball spins, turns, reveals a mark — faint, almost hesitant — Arizona Canyon Kings.

For a heartbeat, no one reacts. The odds said 3.90%. The math said almost impossible.
But the machine — the machine never lies.

Then the eruption comes. Cheers, disbelief, the stunned laughter of a team that just watched the laws of probability bend in their favor. Arizona rises from the desert dust, crowned in the glow of the first overall pick.

Across the stage, Baltimore blinks twice, still unsure if it’s real.
Their odds were lower — 2.7%, almost nothing — yet they’ve clawed up to the No. 2 pick. A miracle, or maybe just another trick of the glass. Either way, the Ironbirds are soaring tonight, and everyone knows it.

The rest fall into place, one by one — a roll call of the faithful, the broken, the nearly blessed.

  1. Arizona Canyon Kings

  2. Baltimore Ironbirds

  3. Charlotte Intimidators

  4. Louisville Bourbon Chasers

  5. Scottsdale Sazeracs

  6. Cincinnati Redlegs

  7. Durham Corgis

  8. Nashville Hot

  9. Vancouver Seawolves

  10. Philadelphia Hooligans

  11. Los Angeles Labradors

  12. Rochester Mighty Flour Mills

  13. Colorado Springs Ranchers

  14. New York Pizza Rats

  15. Helena Highlanders

  16. Salt Lake City Trappers

Somewhere in the back row, a man from Durham rubs his temples. They had hope — always do — but the machine had other plans. Charlotte and Louisville trade polite smiles that don’t reach their eyes. New York sits still, the kind of stillness that smells like resentment.

The studio lights burn too bright now. The chrome glistens, the glass gleams, and for a strange moment, the entire stage feels alive — breathing, pulsing, feeding on every gasp, every cheer, every broken sigh.

Someone whispers, “It chose Arizona,” and the phrase lingers like frost on the tongue.

The host smiles again — that same hotel-lobby smile — and declares the lottery complete. Cameras flash. Confetti falls. The crowd exhales.

But the machine keeps humming.
It always hums.
Because even when the lights go out, it remembers who it lifted up…
and who it left behind.

Before the Ball Rises

Jack Torrance - contributing reporter

They say the baseballs are sleeping now. Resting in their transparent chamber, each one identical — polished, numbered, waiting. But we know better. We know they feel the tension, the electric hum that creeps through the studio like static on old wallpaper.

It’s Draft Lottery Night in Hardball Stitches, Season 4. Sixteen teams. Sixteen chances. One truth: somebody’s luck is about to change, and somebody’s dream will dissolve under bright lights.

The stage glows sterile and silver, all glass and steel and reflection — the kind of place where destiny doesn’t whisper, it hums through the floorboards. On the monitor above, the league’s insignia spins like an eye that never blinks: HARDBALL STITCHES — SEASON 4 DRAFT LOTTERY

There’s applause, of course. Polite. Nervous. Manufactured.
But underneath the surface, you can feel it — the quiet, desperate heartbeat of sixteen front offices waiting for salvation. The contenders stand still in their rows, each team clutching its little share of probability, its fraction of fate.

Durham. Charlotte. Nashville. Cincinnati. Louisville. Scottsdale. Vancouver. Arizona. Baltimore. Philadelphia. Los Angeles. Rochester. Colorado Springs. New York. Helena. Salt Lake City.

Sixteen names, strung like rosary beads. Each one has whispered their prayers to the same cold machine.

Behind the glass, the lottery drum waits — immaculate, mirrored, heartless. A glint of chrome catches the overhead spotlight, and for an instant it looks alive. There’s something almost holy about it. Or maybe hungry.

The host smiles the kind of smile that belongs in hotel portraits and fever dreams.
He says the words everyone’s been waiting for: “It’s time to begin the draw.”

A mechanical hiss. The first baseball trembles. They begin to spin — a white blur, a storm of motion, all hope and chaos compressed into one transparent sphere.

Around the room, tension crackles like lightning over snow. Some stare straight ahead. Some can’t bear to look. The numbers blur together — 16 chances to be rewritten, 16 doors that lead to entirely different futures.

You can hear the soft clink of baseballs colliding — the rhythm of fate, the soft percussion of anxiety.

And then… silence.

One will rise.
One will break the symmetry.
One will wear the crown of the Season 4 Draft.

But not yet. Not yet.

For now, they spin.
And every GM in the room is thinking the same thing — the same, desperate line, scratched somewhere deep inside the skull:

“All work and no luck makes for a long, cold season.”

S3 - Rule 5 Draft

 Jessica Fletcher - contributing reporter

In my years as both a mystery writer and an amateur sleuth, I’ve learned that the smallest overlooked detail can change the course of an entire story. The same could be said for this season’s Rule 5 Draft in our beloved Hardball Stitches league. Quiet transactions and late selections often hide the most intriguing plot twists, and this year was no exception. Some clubs uncovered hidden gems ready to step into the spotlight, while others may find they’ve invited trouble into their clubhouse. Let’s turn back the pages and examine the clues—player by player—to see which moves may become instant classics and which might read more like cautionary tales.

  1. Nashville - Avisail Urias (SP) - Injured during Spring Training. Healed but still on 60-day DL. Had an 1.85 WHIP and 7.45 ERA in his 15 starts and 16 games with Los Angeles last year. But was that the stretch run where LA was running on 0? Maybe, unconfirmed.
  2. Colorado Springs - No pick - 58-104 last year and they couldn't find a player that would be an improvement? The team toyed with the 55 win min last season, but battling close to .500 so far in this early season. And let's not forget that they lost 3 players within the top 10 picks of the Rule 5.
  3. Los Angeles - No pick - Given arm issues over the year, you'd think at least another starter would have made sense, even if a bullpen piece.
  4. Philadelphia - Luis Cook (LF) - Just 23 years old and currently manning 3B for the Hooligans...fitting, given that's how well he plays the position. But the numbers have been there - near .320 hitter, 7 HR through 33 games.
  5. Cincinnati - Evan Goldberg (CF) - Seems to be a plus defender in Center but barely has more hits than strikeouts.
  6. Vancouver - Stolmy Machado (RF) - Back to back picks coming from Colorado Springs. Been solid thus far, near .300 average, 8/11 in steals and has been pretty decent in RF.
  7. Helena - Anthony McNamara (RP) - Former Diamond In The Rough serving as a SuA for the Highlanders and doing so decently well. 1.35 WHIP, 3.31 ERA, 1/1 in saves through 16 1/3 innings. Has more K then ER.
  8. Arizona - Sometimes I feel like you gotta kick the Arizona team to make sure it's still alive.
  9. Charlotte - Gookie Hardy (CF) - yet another Centerfielder and the 3rd Colorado Springs taken; I'm seeing a trend developing. Hardy has no SB, 5 more highs than K - which is 3x as many walks as he has, but hey he's averaging 1 hit a game.
  10. Louisville - No pick - Rumor has it they were too busy chasing the floozies at the bar and forgot about their pick.
  11. Scottsdale - No pick - Were they out drinking with Louisville?
  12. Rochester - Noe Volquez (RP) - Has only seen 7 games thus far this season as a SuB but has been solid out those 10 innings with a .118 OAV.
  13. New York - Fred Monroe (CF) - Part timer with only 12 games and 42 at-bats. Doesn't have power, speed, or average and has logged more time at DH than in the field. Surely they found a better bump on a log to hit as the DH and that's why he's no longer getting ABs.
  14. Baltimore - No pick - Has the most Runs scored this season by over 50 runs.
  15. Tacoma - Dwight Roth (SP) - First SP in the Rule 5 to get a major league start and let's assume the pitcher's park in Tacoma is helping those numbers - 1.39 WHIP, 3.51 ERA. 2.0 K/BB rate.
  16. Tucson - No pick - Is there something in the water in Arizona, none of the three teams in the state made a Rule 5 pick.
  17. Fargo - No pick - Getting to some of the playoff caliber teams that don't have needs to fill from the types in the Rule 5.
  18. Salt Lake City - James Wang (C) - Starting Catcher for the Trappers against Righties and hitting quite nicely at the bottom of the lineup. .373 avg.
  19. Durham - No pick - Given the way this season has gone, they could have surely used someone at this point in the draft. 14-26 at the quarter season mark. But hey, at least they don't own the worst record in HS.
  20. Fresno - Buddy Williams (SS) - You'd think a SS drafted in the Rule 5 would at least be getting late innings fielding opportunities, but he has none and only 2 ABs to his name, but hitting 1.000!! Even 1 HR.
  21. Texas - Paul Barney (2B) - Has a decent average but doesn't appear to be getting any more starts.
  22. San Antonio - No pick - Not really having the season they expected, currently sitting a few games until .500 but leads the league in Shutouts!
  23. Mexico City - No elegir - No se que esta haciendo este equipo.
  24. Montgomery - Adam Orlando (RP) - Surprised he didn't go sooner considering the cost of relief pitchers these days. I'd expect his numbers to go up from his current 1.93 ERA - just look at that 1.57 WHIP for reason #1.
  25. Chicago - No pick - Heard they were too busy cutting the Ivy with pruning sheers and forgot the Rule 5 draft was going on.
  26. Buffalo - Audry Rodriguez (P) - Yikes, trying to set a record for worst ERA in league history. Currently resides at 12.27 through 5 games as a MOP.
  27. Indianapolis - No pick - 2x playoff team doesn't need help from the 5.
  28. New Orleans - No pick - See above just in a better city.
  29. Trenton - No pick - See above just in a worse city
  30. Syracuse - Santiago 'Soledad Salvador Saul' Saenz (SS) - Getting in a little time in the field but I'm told he's an even better cheerleader.
  31. St Louis - No pick - Hoping to get back to the World Series and doesn't need the help of a guy who wasn't good enough to protect.
  32. Boston - John Patterson (SS) - Has appeared in most of their games this season and hitting above .300. What's not to like?

S2 Draft Lottery Results

Amy Amanda 'Triple A' Allen - contributing reporter

Gone are the days when tanking guaranteed you a shot at the top pick. The era of the Draft Lottery has officially begun in Hardball Stitches—and if our first roll of the dice proved anything, it’s that no one’s spot is safe.

In a stunning debut, the lottery brought chaos, drama, and just a hint of poetic justice. Colorado Springs made the biggest leap of the night, vaulting up six spots to snag the No. 2 pick. Meanwhile, Nashville, once eyeing the top of the board, saw their hopes tumble—dropping five spots to land at No. 7.

The message is clear: fortune now favors the lucky, not just the losing. And with that, the draft landscape has officially changed.

Here’s how the rest of the chips fell...

S1 Rule 4 Draft By The Numbers

Amy Amanda 'Triple A' Allen - contributing reporter

EDITOR NOTE - For those of you that were in Cobbfather with me, I'm doing the draft recaps a little different. Instead of giving away free scouting with projections or comps, I'm just going to cover a recap of the draft with some facts. A bit more boring I know, apologize. I still plan to run the On The Clock series that looks back at drafts from 10 seasons prior to see how teams did and who they should have selected in a perfect world.

The dust has settled, the picks are in, and our first Rule 4 Draft is officially in the books. While the debate over who should have gone where will rage on, let's take a step back and focus on what we do know - cold, hard facts.
  • 831 players drafted
    • 519 player signed with their team
      • 120 High School players
        • First 3 players drafted were from High School.

    • For those curious here's how that relates to the reverse waiver order. Obviously with our draft lottery things can (and will likely) change.
      1. Cincinnati - HS
      2. Scranton - College
      3. Nashville - Mix
      4. Los Angeles - Mix
      5. New York - Mix

      13. Mexico City - HS
      14. Montgomery - Mix
      15. San Antonio - College
      16. Indianapolis - HS
        • Will be interesting to see how this one plays out after the lottery and which kind of prospects might slip in the draft. Or if these preferred prospect types even holds true for next season.

Season 2 and beyond!

 Minihouston - Editor-In-Chief

Alright sports fans, as many if you know we have the opportunity to add a very unique feature to Hardball Stitches - a draft lottery similar to that of the MLB rather than the reverse order of the end season records; where the worst record gets first pick.

I’m thrilled to add this feature to our world for many reasons, and wanted to start by giving a shoutout to Bob for offering this to us. Thank you!
  • This ties us a little bit closer to the current MLB set up. Given some of the current coding in HBD, we’ve made a slight change - the MLB gives odds to the bottom 18 teams; we’ll use the 16 who have protected draft picks in the first round instead. That prevents anyone with a 17th pick shifting into the top 16 or a #1 pick being given away due to a Type A FA signing. Only the top 6 picks are picked from the lottery, after that it goes in reserves order of the standings like usual. This means the team with the worst record selects no worse than the 7th pick, second worst picks no worse than the 8th, etc. The bottom three all have the same odds and odds decrease from there with the 16th worst record have a very minimal chance at being selected…but still a chance.
  • It also makes us unique from every other world in HBD and in my opinion gives us an advantage if/when recruiting is needed to backfill teams. Discord and our blog do a fine job recruiting for us as well. Now I imagine there might be a small handful of people that want it the other way because they know where they will pick - but the added level of excitement I think far outweighs the select few who won't like it. Plus it's change, something people have been wishing...hoping...dreaming of to happen in HBD.
  • And on a minor note, it also gives the world another way to combat hard tanking for the #1 pick. Sure teams will tank / rebuild; but it no longer guarantees them the first overall selection. In the 10 mock lotteries we did on discord, the bottom three teams won the #1 pick 6 of the 10 times and only 3 times did one of the bottom three teams end up with the #7 pick. The #15 & 16 teams actually never moved from their position in those 10 mocks and only twice did the #14 team move up - once all the way up to the #1 pick! Now take these numbers lightly as it's a small sample size.
